What is Depression?
Depression is a common psychological disorder. It can affect anyone, at any time. It is more than just feeling unhappy, bored or fed up. Depression can have an extremely debilitating effect on a person’s emotional well-being and their personality.
According to research, approximately one in four people in the UK will suffer from a mental health problem at any one time throughout the year – with depression being one of the most common.
When someone is suffering from depression, it not only has a massive impact on them personally, but it usually affects other members of the family and friends. Depression can affect the way you eat, sleep, work and the way you feel about yourself and your life. Depression can have a root cause, but generally it is a combination of events that ultimately lead to depression. For example, someone may have lost their job and then have to deal with a divorce, or the loss of a loved one. Taking drugs and drinking too much alcohol may be a last resort for some people when life is getting difficult. This always makes things worse. Alcohol is a major depressant. Certain drugs can relax people, but they can also cause depression.
Depression can affect people in different ways. It can cause a variety of physical and psychological symptoms. In most circumstances you may feel hopeless, sad and lose interest in things that you used to enjoy.
Psychological symptoms can include: Feeling constantly sad, anxious or empty. Feeling worthless, helpless or guilty. Feeling pessimistic, irritable and restless. Difficulty making decisions or concentrating. Thoughts of suicide or death.
Physical symptoms can include: Sleep problems. Weight gain or loss. Tiredness and lack of energy. Aches and pains. Diminished sex drive.
These unwanted symptoms can have devastating effects on your health, relationships and your job.
